Containment and sorting terms
Containment is the practice of isolating suspect parts so no defect reaches the OEM line. GP-12 is an early production containment process that adds a dedicated inspection during launch or after a concern. Controlled Shipping is an OEM requirement to add redundant inspection and certify shipments until performance is proven: CSL1 is run by the supplier, and CSL2 adds an independent third party. Sorting is the 100% inspection of a suspect lot to separate conforming parts from defective ones. Rework is the controlled repair of recoverable parts to agreed work instructions.
Problem-solving and documentation terms
SQE is the OEM Supplier Quality Engineer, the person a supplier answers to on quality. A scorecard is the OEM rating that tracks a supplier's quality and delivery performance. 8D is an eight-discipline problem-solving method used to find and fix a root cause. PPAP is the Production Part Approval Process, the package of evidence that proves a part meets requirements before regular shipping. A Quality Liaison is an on-site representative who manages all of this with the SQE on the supplier's behalf.
Launch terms
APQP is Advanced Product Quality Planning, the structured method for bringing a new part to stable production. Safe Launch is the heightened-control period at the start of production when a new part receives extra inspection until data shows the process is capable. Together they keep early defects off the OEM line during a ramp-up such as the Jeep Recon EV at Stellantis Toluca.
